Rescued June 2026
Twigg, Freckles, and PEARL were rescued as 5 week old kittens, orphaned by the death of their mother, Nutmeg.
In early spring, Nutmeg, a Westwood Alleycat, started frequenting the morning feeding bowls left out during daylight hours, for the stray kitties in the area. She was a very sweet short-haired black tabby willing to eat very close to Wilamina. Wilamina had hoped to get her acclimated and then spayed so Nutmeg wouldn’t have any kittens.
Little did she know, Nutmeg was already a momma, and had brought her newly mobile kittens to Wilamina’s carport.
One morning, while watering the outside plants, Wilamina discovered the 3 little doodles, now named Twigg, Freckles, and Pearl, climbing around the crates and trunks, unsafe from the packs of raccoons that frequent the yard at night, looking for food, or enjoying the fresh water that Wilamina leaves out for wildlife.
As a dangerous place to be brought too, Wilamina worked on securing the open carport for them.
She believed to be doing the right thing, but the work itself scared Nutmeg, and so as a good momma, Nutmeg moved her kittens back, one at a time, across the street to the abandoned house, from where they were born.
Wilamina then used the uninhabited space as an opportunity to organize the booth flats, trunks, and crates, making better hiding places, in case Nutmeg and her kittens came back.
Unfortunately, she was badly injured by a section of falling-over booth flats, while moving things around. Wilamina had damaged her knee while squatting down so as to not have the flats land on her head. A loud “pop” and instant swelling, she knew she was in trouble. Crawling to the house, dragging her body, unable to walk, there was nothing more to do than go to the emergency clinic.
Crap! Big. Scary. Crap!
Now laid up in bed, unable to walk without crutches, Wilamina used the time to practice using her new crutches. She checked to see if Nutmeg came back to her yard for the morning and evening food.
She did not.
Wilamina last saw Nutmeg on Friday morning, the next morning after the accident. No Nutmeg Friday night, Saturday morning or night, or even Sunday morning. Wilamina assumed Nutmeg was staying close to her kittens, in the yard of the abandoned house.
What she discovered instead, on Sunday afternoon, was heartbreaking.
Nutmeg had been mauled to death by a neighbor’s dog, running loose. Wilamina saw the dog out the bedroom window, and was worried for her new friend, but thought Nutmeg would be safe.
She was not.
Nutmeg had died days before Wilamina discovered her in the alleyway, and the poor kittens had been without their mother, and food, for two full days!
With no idea where Nutmeg’s kittens were, Wilamina was heartbroken. She worried they had also been killed by the dog, but then the next day, Monday, now 3 days after discovering them in carport, while Wilamina was hobbling around in the yard, trying to figure out now how to water the outside plants without the ability to carry a watering can, Wilamina heard a tiny “Meow!”
She immediately hobbled over to where the noise came from.
TWIGG!
She saw little Twigg in the yard of the abandoned house!
Then she saw Freckles!
Wilamina immediately hobbled back inside (crutches are hard) got some food and formula, tucked them into her Blue Moon Designs pocket-belt, and slowly hobbled back to the yard of the abandoned house.
For a week she posted on her personal Facebook page, the exciting drama and wonderful rescue of Nutmeg’s kittens!
She was able to get all 3 safely inside, and bonded with them during her convalescence.
Dehydrated, with ear-mites and diarrhea, Pearl was in need of care too. She needed to recover from being without her momma, hiding in an unfavorable environment, without food or water. Fortunately she bounced back very quickly!
Now happy and thriving alongside her brother Twigg, and sister Freakles, Pearl is a chirpy, playful little girl, living her best kitten life with the other new kitties at The House of Wormwood.
Nutmeg has been laid to rest under the Velvet Ash tree, in Wilamina’s yard, so she can watch over her little doodles, too.
