Rescued May 2025
An unforeseen emergency led Wilamina to leave the Southern California Renaissance Faire, on a Sunday morning, to head home. As she was driving on the northbound 5 Freeway, just south of Sacramento, in the middle of nothing but orchards, she spotted a little tan kitten on the side of the road. It was no larger than a ground squirrel.
Quickly pulling over, she collected her hoodie and hopped out to collect the little lump.
Buckwheat was clearly confused and moving in a circular motion having no clue what to do or where to go. He was only a few feet from the slow lane’s white line and there was a lot of fast-moving traffic driving by.
It was very scary.
As Wilamina collected herself (freeway rescues are rather scary) she calmly walked back towards him, hoping to get between him and the slow-lane. Buckwheat started to awkwardly move into the slow lane, just as a huge semi came barring down!
Wilamina didn’t want to run, for fear of scaring him into traffic, so she took a deep breath and said to the heavens,
“If you have any love for me at all, you will not let me see this kitten get run over!”
For the kitten that would be horrible, obviously, and Wilamina would have that image in her head for the rest of her life, something she never wants to endure, or the guilt of not getting to him in time.
Just then as Buckwheat was inching closer, Wilamina gasped and stopped moving, not sure whether to shield her eyes, run, what!
Thankfully the powerful gust of wind, created by the fast traveling truck, BLEW Buckwheat backwards towards the orchard with enough just room so Wilamina could get between him and the road. She quickened pace and without difficulty, other than one tiny “spat” from the sweet lump, scooped him up and held him tight to her chest.
They were both so lucky!
6 hours later, sleeping soundly in the travel carrier Wilamina keeps in her carriage, to use for this very reason, Buckwheat was safe in his new home.
Buckwheat had to travel with Wilamina back to the Renaissance Faire for the final weekend, and the tear-down period! He was the perfect co-pilot, going potty in the box, eating and sleeping on ice blocks, as it was far too hot. At the Faire, he was tucked comfortably in the back of the soappe-booth, in his little crate and play area, and was a delight to friends who came to see him.
Buckwheat did really well, despite being in a GREAT DEAL OF PAIN, unbeknownst to Wilamina!
A few weeks later, after his initial vet visit the day after Wilamina brought him home, she took him back to see if there was in fact something actually wrong with him. Buckwheat was very angry. He would bite more than the usual teething kitten, and although Wilamina did all the things the internet said about how to deal with biting kittens and hands, it turned out BOTH EARS were INFECTED with FOXTAILS!
THE POOR DOODLE! He had been suffering for weeks! Wilamina had no idea. The vet didn’t see anything on the first visit. Buckwheat was so tiny it was hard to get the otoscope in his ears. They both had no idea his ears were already infected!
No wonder he was so spicy!
Now, Buckwheat is celebrating his 6 month Birthday, on October 1st, his ears are healthy, he is happy and playful and currently at the vet today getting “fixed.”
He is back at home, resting and will forever have a safe home with Wilamina at The House of Wormwood.
Huzzah, Buckwheat! The spicy Faire-brat!
