Starry was a wreck. He clearly had been fixed, indicated by his clipped ear, but his skin and coat where a disaster, with huge scabby and balding patches all over his body. He was very skittish, and would not be touched. He would walk up to the house, drop down and roll over, just out of reach, as if asking for love, but would run away whenever Wilamina got too close. Finally with a high-quality and consistent diet, his skin and coat began to heal and shine. Wilaminaʼs softness and patience began to work on his heart. She was finally, a year later, able to pet him…but just a little bit, and pick him up very carefully.
One day Wilamina discovered he had an abscess on his jawline, below the ear, so off to the vet he went. Once in the rehabilitation room, Wilamina spent nights with Starry. Thatʼs when she discovered the white spots on his skin, later becoming the inspiration for his name. She thought the spots were the stars in his midnight black fur, and the streaks of white hairs from scar-tissue, the shooting stars!
It has been a very long road with Starry. He suffers from feline hyperesthesia syndrome, a rare illness that causes episodes of agitation and sensitivity to touch. When he is in pain, he retreats back into the distance, but when he feels good, he likes to sit on Wilaminaʼs lap and get neck and chin scratches, and heʼs quick to come when called. He is a very sweet, but broken being, and will always receive love and patience at the House of Wormwood.
